The Boston Marathon is the World’s Oldest Annual Marathon

After experiencing the spirit and majesty of the Olympic marathon in 1896, the team manager of the United States Olympic team decided to organize and conduct a marathon in the Boston area. Various routes were considered until the present route was decided on.

The first Boston Marathon, run in April 1897 by fifteen athletes, was won by John McDermott of New York, who in the process secured a position in sports history. In 1924, the course was lengthened to 26 miles 385 yards, to confirm to the Olympic standard. This original distance of 24.8 miles was based on the distance run, according to a famous Greek legend, in which a Greek foot soldier was sent from the plains of Marathon to Athens with the news of an astounding victory over the Persian army.

The distance was changed in 1908, during the Olympic Games in London to the distance of 26 miles and 385 yards. This is the distance that has been run in every Olympic marathon since then. This has become the standard for every marathon since that time, including the Boston Marathon.

The Boston marathon has always been run on a Monday, and since 1969 it has been run on Patriots’ Day, which is the third Monday in April. In 1966 women were included in the athletes able to run in the Boston marathon, and in 1975 became the first marathon to include a wheelchair division in the competition.
